Epic Mickey is a series of video games seeking to rebrand Mickey Mouse as being a more modern action hero, as well as reintroduce Oswald the Lucky Rabbit into the Disney canon.

The Canon[]
The premise of the Epic Mickey series is that before Walt Disney died, he created a world inside of a magical model of Disneyland, where his characters could "retire" after falling out of the public eye. Popular characters with many fans develop a "Heart," and only ones with a Heart could exist outside the model.
Oswald, who was essentially stolen by the animation studio Walt originally worked for, became the self-proclaimed king of this world. Oswald was jealous of his "half-brother" Mickey's fame and success, and worked to make the world inside the model a reflection of Disneyland without the mouse's presence. One day, however, Mickey stumbled across the model and spilled magic Paint and Thinner all over it. The magical substances mixed together, creating a monster called the Shadow Blot. Mickey tried to get rid of it, but the monster escaped into the model. Inside, this event became known as the Thinner Disaster, as a tidal wave of Thinner had washed out huge sections of the model, as well as many Toons (who, being made of ink, can be harmed by Thinner). From that point on, the inhabitants of the model called their home the Cartoon Wasteland.
The Wasteland still retains some resemblance to Disneyland, but with most details twisted and seen in a negative light (For example, Mean Street instead of Main Street, U.S.A.). The first two games in the series are basically Mickey discovering the consequences of his actions and working to win back Oswald's trust while fixing the problems he had caused. The other game is a spin-off title that crosses Epic Mickey over with an older series of Mickey Mouse games, the Castle of Illusion series.

While the first game was quite successful, the sequels had a poor showing, and the series as a whole is an overall rare fandom. Many fics are simply set to explore the unique nature of the canon universe. The world is seeing a slow but steady influx of Mary Sues. Every so often, Mickey and Oswald get slashed. Just don't tell Minnie and Ortensia.
