Finarfin was the youngest of Finwë's three sons. He was the most sensible and level-headed of the three, and though he followed Fëanor and Fingolfin when they started out to return to Middle-earth, he soon turned back and ended up staying in Valinor. He was crowned the ruler of the Noldor who remained.
He married Earwen of the Teleri and they had five children (in the published Silm, although Tolkien later revised this to four in late writings), all of whom followed Fëanor to Middle-earth: Finrod, later known as Felagund; Orodreth, who lived with Finrod in Nargothrond (but was demoted to Angrod's son in late writings); Angrod and Aegnor, who were especially close and were sent as emisarries from the Noldor to the Elves of Thingol; and Galadriel, who was the only one of the five to survive the First Age and went on to become one of the most powerful Elves in Middle-earth.
